01 The agreement
These Terms of Service form an agreement between you ("you") and the maker of Local Narrator ("we", "us") governing your use of the Local Narrator iOS application and any updates we make to it (collectively, the "App").
Your download and use of the App is also governed by Apple's Standard EULA as required by the App Store. Where these terms are silent, that EULA applies.
02 Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the App on any iPhone or iPad you own or control, in accordance with the App Store rules and Family Sharing (where the in-app purchase has been made and Family Sharing is enabled).
03 The in-app purchase
The App is free to download. A single non-consumable in-app purchase ("Local Narrator Full Access", US $4.99 or local equivalent) unlocks unlimited book imports, all neural voices, full speed range, the widget, sleep timer, and unlimited bookmarks. There is no subscription. The purchase is shareable through Apple Family Sharing.
All payments, billing, refunds, and Family Sharing administration are handled by Apple. Refund requests should be made to Apple via reportaproblem.apple.com.
04 Your books are your responsibility
The App reads files you bring to it. By importing a file you confirm that:
- You have the legal right to read that file aloud to yourself for personal, non-commercial use.
- You will not import files protected by digital rights management (DRM) and will not attempt to circumvent any such protection. Encrypted EPUBs are detected and rejected by the App.
- You will not use the App to redistribute synthesized audio of copyrighted works to others, publish it publicly, or use it commercially. The App is built for personal listening, not for production.
We do not see what files you import. The responsibility for respecting authors' and publishers' rights is yours.
05 Acceptable use
Don't use the App to harm anyone. Don't try to circumvent device security, the App Store rules, or Apple's anti-piracy systems. Don't decompile or repackage the App in ways that violate Apple's EULA.
06 Third-party software
The App bundles open-source software, including the Kokoro-82M neural voice model (Apache 2.0), the FluidAudio Swift package (Apache 2.0), and ZIPFoundation (MIT). Their respective licences continue to apply. Their authors are not affiliated with us and do not endorse the App.
07 Speech synthesis is imperfect
Neural text-to-speech is excellent but not perfect. Pronunciation, pacing, and the handling of unusual names, foreign words, footnotes, equations, or visual elements may be imperfect or wrong. The App is provided as a reading aid, not as a definitive recording. Don't rely on the App where accuracy of pronunciation matters (legal proceedings, medical instructions, emergency communications).
08 No warranty
The App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all such warranties.
09 Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall we be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages — including loss of data, lost profits, or loss of goodwill — arising out of or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, the App. Our total aggregate liability for any direct damages will not exceed the amount you paid for the in-app purchase, or US $5 if no purchase was made.
10 Changes to the App and to these terms
We may update the App from time to time. Some updates may add features, change behaviour, or remove features. We may update these terms when the App changes; the date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated through the App Store release notes.
11 Termination
You may stop using the App and delete it from your device at any time. We may terminate or suspend your right to use the App if you breach these terms or violate Apple's policies. The in-app purchase is governed by Apple's refund and revocation processes.
